Ed is a Chartered Psychologist and leads on Human Factors and Organisational Psychology at HSE’s Science Division. He has worked on a broad range of consultancy and research projects over his career, and previously worked in the Offshore Oil and Gas and Maritime Sectors. His work has covered topics such as task and equipment design, human reliability, competence assurance, and staff selection and development. He was also involved in the development and launch of HSE’s Management Standards for work related stress.
Since returning to HSE in 2016, he has worked extensively on the topics of health and safety leadership development, and incident investigation training. He is a member of several Human Factors industry groups and contributes to a number of academic journal boards. He has also been involved in developing industry guidance and standards. Following Ed’s current focus on health and safety leadership development, he is undertaking a PhD on this topic at Alliance Manchester Business School.
